SUSANNA SAW
Festival Artistic Director
Susanna Saw is an active music educator promoting music and choral education in Malaysia. She obtained her Master in Music Education (Choral Focus) from Westminster Choir College, U.S.A. She is currently a lecturer and choir director at the Faculty of Music at the University of Malaya (UM) and the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA), where she conducts the MIA Ladies Chorus, the Men’s Chorus and the Mixed Voices Choir. Both the Men and Ladies Choruses have won many gold medals and been category winners in various international competitions. In 2007, Susanna established the Young Choral Academy in Kuala Lumpur, a venue for choral lovers to learn more about vocal and choral education. She was instrumental in bringing the Kodály Teachers’ Training Course to Malaysia to improve the standards of local classroom music teaching. She organized the 24th nternational Kodály Symposium in August 2019, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia; through this, she hopes to bring more awareness of the Kodály teaching philosophy to the Southeast Asian region. During the pandemic, Susanna organized monthly Kodály Online Hangouts, bringing together music educators from around the world to learn, sing and stay connected. Susanna is also the Founder and Director of the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE), which has organised various symposium, national and international choir festival since 2002. Since 2007, Susanna has been regularly invited by INTERKULTUR, Germany, to be a member of the jury for the Asia Pacific and World Choir Games. She has been appointed a member of the Working Committee for the Asia-Pacific Choral Council, under the auspices of the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM). Susanna is also an active speaker at various music education events, promoting effective music teaching in the 21st century. She currently holds the position of Vice-President in the International Kodály Society, the World Youth and Children Choral Artists’ Association, and the Malaysian Association for Music Education. She also serves on the Advisory Board of CHORALSPACE, Germany.

Tommyanto Kandisaputra
Festival Jury
Tommyanto Kandisaputra is the Founder and Artistic Director of Studio Cantorum Bandung Choir & Orchestra since 1991 and Bandung Choral Society which has been organizing concerts, choir training, competitions and Choir Symposiums since 2000. On January 22-25, 2025, he was successfully organized The 7th SYMPOSIUM ON CHORAL MUSIC in Bandung City, Indonesia. He is also the Artistic Director of the 14th Bali International Choir Festival in Denpasar which is held annually successfully since 2012 until now. Previously, successfully held The North Sulawesi International Choir Competition 2008 in Manado, Tomohon International Choir Competition 2009 and 2010 in North Sulawesi, Rhapsodie Indonesia ChoirFestival (2019), Jakarta World Choir Festival (2019) and International Bandung Choral Festival 2022, 2023, 2024 in collaboration with Parahyangan University Bandung and the National Narcotics Agency of the Republic of Indonesia. Tommyanto has also been elected as a member of the World Choir Council and representative of INTERKULTUR Indonesia since 2006, and has brought many Indonesian Choirs to perform on various international stages and competitions with great success. Became Artistic Director of The 1st Asian Choir Games, November 2007, in Jakarta, and as a judge in World Choir Games in Xiamen-China 2006, Graz- Austria 2008, Shaozing-China 2010, Cincinnati-USA 2012. In 2014 he became the representative of Indonesia at “One Asia Cultural Ambassador” held by “The Music for One Foundation”, South Korea. Then became the Conductor of the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir on May 4, 2016, performing at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. He was a speaker at the Asian Pacific Children Choir Assembly in Okinawa, December 2016, and The Summer Academy of Lithuanian Conductors in Vilnius, Lithuania, August 2017. He was a judge at the Suwon Choral Festival, and led a Workshop at the Jeju Senior Choir Festival – South Korea, the Claudio Monteverdi International Choral Festival in Venice, October 2019, Rimini 2024 and The Busan International ChoralFestival at Oktober 2022 and 2025, Malaysia International Choral Festival December 2022, 2023 and November 2024. In 2025, he is doing the very successful MEDAN WORLD CHORAL FESTIVAL, INTERNATIONAL BANDUNG CHORAL FESTIVAL, SURABAYA WORLD CHORAL FESTIVAL and The 14th BALI INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL 2025. He is the Artistic Director of Thailand International Choral Festival 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. Tommyanto is a singing teacher and leads many Choir Development Programs for Singers and Conductors by doing seminars and workshops all over Indonesia. Since 2006, Tommyanto has represented INTERKULTUR Indonesia and the World Choir Council, facilitating Indonesian choirs' global participation. He directed The 1st Asian Choir Games (2007) and judged World Choir Games internationally. He's been a "One Asia Cultural Ambassador" in South Korea (2014) and conducted the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir in Taiwan (2016). Beyond conducting, Tommyanto has spoken at global events like the Asian Pacific Children Choir Assembly (2016) and the Summer Academy of Lithuanian Conductors (2017). He's judged and led workshops at festivals such as the Suwon Choral Festival and the Claudio Monteverdi International Choral Festival. He's also participated in the Malaysia Choral Eisteddfod - International Choir Festival (2022, 2023), contributing significantly to choral music development in Indonesia. Lim Ai Hooi
Festival Jury
Ai Hooi’s philosophy for choral music and teaching stems from her view that a fulfilling musical journey is one that is filled with sincerity, love and excellence. She uses the creation of music as a platform to share and infuse her values and beliefs in her singers, and inspires them to use the beauty of music to craft experiences that touch the hearts of the audience. Born in Penang,Malaysia, Ai Hooi graduated from Royal College of Music, London with Majors in Piano and Voice.After moving to Singapore, Ai Hooi actively contributes to the growth of the local choral scene, through nurturing younger choral conductors and choristers. On top of conducting several local secondary and junior college choirs, Ai Hooi established ONE Chamber Choir, a young adult choir. In 2017, the choir achieved the 2nd Prize of the Mixed Choirs category at the 15th International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf 2017, as well as the Special Prize of the Carl-Orff-Stiftung Diessan am Ammersee for the best interpretation of a choral worked premiered at the competition for “The Emigrant” by Wolfram Buchenberg. Recently, the choir took part in the 10th World Choir Games in Tshwane, South Africa and achieved Gold in all three categories they competed in, including Champion of the World Choir Games in the Chamber Choir Category. She has also been the conductor of the Hwa Chong Institution Choir since 2000 which has achieved numerous accolades over the years, including emerging Champion in the Mixed Choir category at the 5th World Choir Games 2008, achieving the title Absolute Winner (top choir across categories) at the Festival of Songs Olomouc, and the Prix du public (Public prize) at the 2010 Florilège vocal de Tour. Ai Hooi has served as a jury member on numerous international choral festivals, including the World Choir Games, Asian Choral Grand Prix, Singapore International Choral Festival, Bali International Choir Festival, Taipei International Choral Competition, Canta Al Mar Festival Coral Internacional, Karangturi International Choral Festival, Festival Coros de Verão and so on. She has also shared her conducting experiences as a panellist in Poland, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Ai Hooi co-founded Sourcewerkz PL in 2010 to further her calling to teach, touch and transform the larger choral community and its audience. To date, Sourcewerkz has organised the Winter Choral Festival in Hong Kong since 2010 and Festival Coros de Verão in Lisbon since 2012, as well as various workshops with international choral clinicians. In 2014, she conceptualised and directed the 1stSingapore International Choral Festival and since then, SICF has played host to over 15,000 choristers and is now in her seventh iteration.

Pearl Shangkuan

Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is a highly sought-after conductor, lecturer and clinician who has led performances and workshops on six continents. She is the National President-elect of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), having previously served on the Board of Directors of Chorus America, as well as ACDA central division president and ACDA Michigan state president. She is the chorus director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, a Grammy-nominated professional orchestra and Professor Emerita of Music at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Appointed in 2022 as the Editor of Hinshaw Music, a major choral music publisher in North America, she also has a signature choral series with earthsongs and is the music editor of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship choral series published by GIA. She has conducted several times at Carnegie Hall and other major concert halls in the US and was an invited guest lecturer at the World Symposium for Choral Music held in Seoul, South Korea. Her guest conducting engagements regularly take her to Europe, Asia, and across North America. This season, she also has guest engagements in New Zealand and South America. Dr. Shangkuan has served on the jury of several international choral competitions in Europe and Asia and has led conducting masterclasses for the ACDA national and Chorus America conferences. She has also been artist-in-residence for various prominent graduate music programs and institutions across the US. She has conducted numerous All State choirs, ACDA national and division honor choirs, and choral festivals nationally and internationally and has headlined several ACDA state and other professional conferences. She has commissioned and premiered numerous choral works and her choirs have performed at ACDA national, division and state conferences. The Michigan YWCA honored her with its Arts Tribute Award in 2007. In 2013, Michigan ACDA honored her with the Maynard Klein Choral Award for “artistic excellence and lifetime leadership in choral music.” In 2020, she received a Calvin University Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2023, the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) gave her its Honorary Life Member Award for “distinguished leadership and extraordinary service to the choral community, both nationally and internationally.”

Maria Theresa Vizconde-Roldan

Theresa holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education degree from Saint Paul University Manila. She also graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Music in Music Education, cum laude and Master of Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. Maria Theresa Vizconde-Roldan is currently teaching Conducting, Large Ensemble Class and Music Education at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Conservatory of Music, Centro Escolar University (CEU) Conservatory of Music and CEU Graduate School. She served as Music teacher in Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) – High School Department from 2000-2018. She became the Music coordinator for the two-year transitional Junior High School from 2013-2016. As a sought after choral pedagogue and children’s choir conductor, Theresa has been invited as guest conductor, choral clinician and has been giving conducting master classes, choral and music education lectures and workshops around the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, and the United States of America. She has also been invited to adjudicate in prestigious international choral festivals and competitions and served as chairman for choir competition at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in the Philippines. To propagate the Filipino choral music and in their advocacy to promote and strengthen the children’s choral movement in the Philippines, Theresa, together with her husband Jude, arranges Filipino folksongs and writes choral music for children’s choirs. They also founded the Treble Choir Association of the Philippines and organized Groundwork for Choirs, a series of choral workshops for conductors around the Philippines and launched their book Groundwork for Part-Singing, a collection of short pieces to develop the readiness of choristers to sing in parts. Her choral works have been published, performed and premiered at various choral festivals and competitions around the world. These works were published by Hal Leonard Publishing Company and Pavane Publishing in the USA. She was one of the featured composers at the 2015 Pacific International Choral Festival in Eugene, Oregon, USA and lecturer at the 2019 International Kodaly Symposium in Kuching Sarawak, Malaysia. She led the Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir to choral competitions winning first-ever Children’s Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in North Wales, United Kingdom and Choir Olympic Champions at the World Choir Games in Bremen, Germany. With her leadership, the choir was featured and guested in international choir festivals such as the 12th Cantemus International Choral Festival and Conducting Mastercourse in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, Pacific International Choral Festival in Oregon Bach Festival, USA, 6th World Vision International Children’s Choir Festival in South Korea. Theresa is also a church musician, she started singing in the church when she was 12. In 2017, together with her husband Jude, they attended the International Conference Music and Church: Cult and Culture 50 years after Musicam Sacram in Vatican City, Italy, where they had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis. She is the conductor of the Young Voices of the Philippines and Kantabella. Theresa is also the Vice President for Projects of the Philippine Choral Directors Association (PCDA) and President of the Treble Choir Association of the Philippines (TCAP).

T.J. Harper

T. J. Harper is Associate Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and Chair of the Department of Music at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. Choirs under my direction have performed at annual conferences for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the California Choral Directors Association (CCDA), a featured performance at Carnegie Hall, and international performances by invitation to Austria, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Italy, and Spain. He has received invitations as conductor, clinician and lecturer throughout the United States and internationally in Argentina, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Venezuela. Dr. Harper received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California where he graduated with honors. He was the Chair of the ACDA International Activities Committee, the past Director of the ACDA International Conductors Exchange Program, and most recently was a Board Member for the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM).

Tracy Wong

Dr. Tracy Wong hails from Malaysia and is a choral conductor, music educator, composer, vocalist, and pianist. Dr. Wong is passionate about helping choral educators to provide unique experiences for their students through collaborative commissions, customized workshops, festivals, and artist residencies. She does this through focusing on the balance of performance practice considerations, vocal and acoustic explorations, and choral artistry and heart. Currently residing in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Wong is the Assistant Professor of Choral Studies at Western University, where she conducts Chorale and Les Choristes ensembles. She also serves as the Conductor of the Grand Philharmonic Youth Choir in Kitchener, Ontario. Dr. Wong holds a Doctor in Musical Arts and Master in Music Performance (Choral Conducting) degrees from the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt. She is also a proud recipient of the 2016 & 2017 Elmer Iseler National Graduate Fellowship in Choral Conducting, and 2018-19 McMaster University Student Union Teaching Award. As an active clinician and educator, Dr. Wong had conducted workshops for choirs in North America, Malaysia, Brunei, France, Ireland, and Portugal. Dr. Wong advocates for repertoire-based music education by writing pieces that are teaching tools for singers to develop vocal technique, musicianship skills, and artistry. As part of her continued search to define her Chinese-Malaysian-Canadian identity, her music also shows the coming-together of different languages and musical elements that continue to influence her composition writing. Dr. Wong was the 2019 Canadian Composer Feature for the Canadian Kodaly Journal, Alla Breve. She collaborates regularly with choral organizations in Canada and Malaysia on commissioned choral projects and her pieces are featured at numerous reading sessions. Her works have been performed by Malaysian, North American, European, and Southeast Asian choirs at international competitions and festivals. Dr. Wong's choral works are available on her website as well as Cypress Choral Music (Canada), Graphite Publishing (US), and Young Choral Academy (Malaysia). They have been performed by Malaysian, North American, European, and Southeast Asian choirs at international competitions and festivals.

Paul Smith

Paul Smith is an innovative and creative performer, conductor, composer, an inspirational educator and an empowering public speaker. As co-founder of Grammy-nominated VOCES8, author of The VOCES8 Method and CEO of the VOCES8 Foundation, his annual programme sees him working globally in prestigious concert venues, festivals, schools, universities and wider communities. Paul is passionate about the impact singing and the arts can have in the widest possible context – from academic improvement to social skills and building more cohesive communities. He uses that passion to design and deliver unique, inclusive and uplifting performance projects. Collaboration is a key word to describe Paul’s approach to music making, and in recent collaborations, he has been thrilled to work with artists including Paul Simon, Eric Whitacre, percussionist/composer Teena Lyle, stage designer Julia Hansen (Glyndebourne, Santa Fe Opera) Christophe Duquense (Dune 2), opera director Anisha Bondy (Komische Oper Berlin) and loop station world champion, MandoBeatbox. During the last three years Paul has led the VOCES8 Foundation in two major online initiatives. The online LIVE From London festivals set a benchmark for artistic collaboration and provided performers, composers and arts organisations from around the world with a focus during a time of great upheaval. Paul was himself a performer in the festival as well as having his compositions premiered. The VOCES8 Digital Academy was also launched in 2020, giving the opportunity for choirs and individuals to learn choral works online with VOCES8 and Paul, and to have live sessions. This proved especially valuable whilst students were having to learn both at home and at their educational establishment. Season highlights for 2024-25 include: leading the Sing’In massed choir projects across France and Germany, work with the Philharmonies in Paris and Berlin; performances of works from his new album titled ‘Revolutions’ at the Kaufman Centre, New York and the Barbican, London; various performances in France, Germany and Austria of his community project ‘Rhythm of Life’ with MandoBeatbox and Daniela Mars; programmes with VOCES8, Apollo5 and Lyyra (the new upper voice ensemble from the VOCES8 Foundation) across the US, and concerts and workshops in Germany, the USA, Asia and South America. The VOCES8 Method, written by Paul, is published by Edition Peters in four languages, and is now being used in thousands of schools in numerous countries around the world. The Method is designed to link specific music-making activities with academic improvement in numeracy, literacy and linguistics. As a composer, Paul writes regularly for vocal groups, choirs, orchestras and soloists. Publications in 2024-25 included Wayfaring Stranger, Magnificat and Love Always Within. Other recently published commissions include his setting of the Nunc Dimittis and the Edo Lullaby on the VOCES8 Singles range. Paul’s music is published by VOCES8 Publishing, ECS/Morningstar and Edition Peters. Publications and commissions for 2024-25 include a new album of his work for VOCES8, which is released as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration for the group, and will include a feature performance at the Barbican in 2025. As a composer and pianist, Paul works with flutist and composer, Daniela Mars in their duo, MARS SMITH. This season will see them give concerts as they tour their new album 'Faroe Islands: Echoes on the Wind'. They will be collaborating with Wishful Singing for concerts in The Netherlands and will give performances together in the UK, US, France and Germany and also make a debut visit to Asia. They continue their work on a new album inspired by Lençóis Maranhenses in Brazil. Since its inception in 2007 the VOCES8 Foundation has worked with 500,000 young people. Projects have included massed singing performances at the Royal Opera House (London), Cité de la Musique (Paris) and La Folle Journée (Nantes); and with “singing city” projects in cities such as Torino, Wroclaw, Lyon, Hannover, Houston, Albuquerque, Dallas/Fort Worth, Bermuda, Nairobi, Lagos, Dubai, Tokyo, and Taipei. Working in partnership with the Diocese of London, Paul has spearheaded the creation of a home for the VOCES8 Foundation at the VOCES8 Centre, a centre of excellence in vocal music performance, education and outreach in the heart of the City of London. As an educator and public speaker, Paul has given speeches and created sessions on music and leadership, teamwork, music and creativity, health and wellbeing, and The VOCES8 Method. He presented a TEDx talk entitled ‘How can we use music to help us learn?’. Engagements at international conferences include the ACDA National conventions; Europa Cantat; the London Music Education Expo; Chor.com; the World Symposium of Singing at the Liszt Music Academy; the World Symposium of Choral Music and at the Royal College of Music in London. Paul has been singing for more than 30 years, first as a boy chorister with the choir of Westminster Abbey, and, since 2005 with VOCES8. As a recording artist with Decca Classics, Paul has featured on best-selling, chart-topping albums and won a host of international awards. He was an Executive Producer on VOCES8’s Grammy-nominated album ‘The Lost Birds’. His first album as a solo artist, ‘Reflections’, was released in 2019 and entered the top 10 in the UK Specialist Classical Charts. His 2022 album, ‘Renewal?’ has also received wide critical acclaim.

Pasawut Jodi Piriyapongrat

Pawasut Jodi Piriyapongrat earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Education with honors from Chulalongkorn University; Master of Music in Church Music; and Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music from the University of Southern California, where she studied choral conducting with the late Dr. William Dehning. Through her extensive choral experiences, including conducting Thai Youth Choir (2007-2009) and Chulalongkorn University Concert Choir (2007-present), and many collaborative works of the latter with professional Thai and international orchestras, Pawasut has earned her recognition as Thailand’s leading choral conductor, guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and choral educator with national and international engagements including in China, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Srilanka, and USA. She dedicates much time and energy in bettering choral standards in Thailand through her involvement with Thailand Ministry of Education and numerous choral activity initiatives with Chulalongkorn University that include various workshops, choral festivals for secondary school, university, and community choirs, and choral camps for university choirs in Thailand. Some of her initiatives were in collaboration with American Choral Directors Association. She is a full-time faculty member of Music Education Division, Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, Executive Committee Member of Asian Choral Association, and serves as President of Thailand Choral Conductors Association.

Ken Steven

Hailing from Medan, Ken Steven (b.1993) is an accomplished Indonesian choral composer, arranger, and conductor. As composer, He is known for his fusion of Indonesian colors and elements with modern techniques and harmonies. His works have been performed by choirs around the world, and has contributed extensively to the development of choral music in Indonesia. He holds a Bachelor degree from The Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music, Philippines that explores the inculturation of church music. With a deep understanding of blending diverse musical traditions, he then embarked on a Master's degree journey in Choral Conducting at California Baptist University, USA. Currently, he serves as the Principal at Methodist Charles Wesley Music Vocational High School in Medan, Indonesia. He is also the conductor of Medan Community Choir, founded in 2015, and has led the choir to achieve many prestigious awards in national and international choral festivals.

Hans Van Den Brand

Hans van den Brand has been active in the international choral world and music education for several decades as a vocalist, conductor, arranger, coach, workshop leader, adjudicator, teacher, publicist and organizer. He studied music education, piano and choral conducting at the Brabant Conservatory and specialized in musical theatre and light vocal music. Hans gained international fame with the Fontys Jazz Choir, with which he won the TV competition Korenslag in 2010 and became World Champion Jazz in 2016 during the World Choir Games in Sochi. He was also a university lecturer in music education and choir conducting at the Fontys Academy for Music Education Tilburg and the Conservatory of Amsterdam. As a member of the World Choir Council of Interkultur, he contributes to the development of choral singing at an international level. Hans is currently vocal coach with vocal group Des Unique Tilburg and male vocal ensemble Dubbel Zes Den Bosch.

Alec Schumacker

Alec Schumacker is the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa where he conducts the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir. He presently serves as the Vice President of the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. He completed his DMA in Choral Conducting at the University of Miami, where he studied with Joshua Habermann and Karen Kennedy. His master’s degree in Choral Conducting is also from the University of Miami. He graduated cum laude with honors in music from Williams College. An award-winning composer and arranger, Alec’s choral music is published by Alliance Music Publications, earthsongs, Hinshaw Music, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and World Projects. His works have been performed around the country by all-state choruses and prestigious ensembles such as the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, the New World Symphony, the University of Delaware Chorale, the Frost Chorale, the Voices of Aloha, and even at the NFL’s Pro Bowl in 2016. An active educator and sought-after presenter, Alec delivered lectures at the 2023 and 2019 International Kodály Symposia in Los Angeles and Malaysia, the 2020 Western Division ACDA conference in Salt Lake City, the 2018 and 2016 Asia Kodály Symposia in Taiwan, the 2017 National ACDA conference in Minneapolis, and various others. His written work on incorporating popular music in the choral curriculum was recently published by GIA in the textbook Becoming Musical.

Lee Shiak Yao is one of the most exciting Malaysian musicians of his generation. A graduate from the University of Hull, UK with an MMus in Conducting, he has studied with Andrew Penny and Dr. Lee Tsang, piano accompaniment with June Stephenson, singing with Ralph Macdonald, Lim Cheng Hock, Paul Wade and Dr. Michela Bertagnolli. As a multiple prize and award-winning performer and clinician in the local as well as on international stages, he has performed and lectured in more than 35 countries around the world, across Scandinavia, Europe, USA, South America, Asia and South Africa. Aside from international engagements, he is affiliated with the International Federation of Choral Music, World Youth Choir, World Chamber Choir and Asian Youth Choir; serving as the Vice-President of Malaysian Choral Federation, Music Director of Klang Music Festival, Artistic Director of Time Ensemble among other prominent positions in the country.
